Deploying Agile and Secure Healthcare Solutions in Blood Management

Today, the healthcare sector is contending with the issue of ageing populations and the growing demand for healthcare services associated with that. While this affects all areas of healthcare provision, it has a notable impact on blood management services, as people over 60 years of age constitute a high percentage of blood product recipients. As the number of elderly people increases, so too does the demand for blood products and services.

In response to these critical challenges, the upcoming 2024 E-Health in Norway (EHiN) conference will highlight the need for innovative, agile, and secure healthcare solutions. As an industry leader, Omda is at the forefront of e-health development, providing solutions that equip healthcare providers with ground-breaking digital tools, empower medical professionals, and enable adaptation to the rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.

Our leading blood management system, Omda ProSang, illustrates the value of this approach. An agile and adaptable solution, it improves workflow efficiency, enables end-to-end collaboration and ensures patient safety. In doing so, it helps blood management organisations overcome critical operational challenges.

Engaging with blood management’s most pressing challenges

The challenges posed by ageing populations are not unique to Norway. In fact, they reflect a broader, European-wide trend. Compelling research suggests this demographic shift will be sizable and significant. The European Commission anticipates the median age in the EU-27 will increase by 4.5 years between 2019 and 2050 (EC).

The EC also calculates and forecasts the old-age dependency ratio – a measure of the ‘relative size of the older part of the population compared with the working-age population’.

  • 25.9 % in 2001 (around four working-age persons for every older person)
  • 34.1 % in 2019 (just under three working-age persons for every older person)
  • 56.7 % in 2050 (fewer than two working-age persons for every older person) (EC)

Staff shortages in the healthcare sector exacerbate the problems associated with increased demand for blood products and services. At the same time, complex organisational structures and increasing specialisation pose challenges. While highly specialised teams enable healthcare professionals to push the boundaries of what is possible within a narrow knowledge field, they typically produce significant variations in working cultures, distinct decision-making processes and operational idiosyncrasies. These make efficient collaboration more difficult.

An agile and secure blood management system

To overcome these challenges, blood management professionals are turning to digital solutions to improve operational efficiency and facilitate greater collaboration. Omda ProSang is a comprehensive Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) designed to revolutionise blood, cell, and tissue management. It achieves this in several ways:

  • End-to-end blood management software – Omda ProSang optimises every aspect of the blood supply process from donation to transfusion, enhancing safety and connecting all professionals across all stages of the blood management system.
  • Advanced 2D scanning technology – Omda ProSang’s innovative 2D scanning reduces the number of scans required to process products, streamlining workflows and increasing efficiency while maintaining product integrity and patient safety.
  • Standardisation – Omda ProSang features full support for ISBT 128, enabling organisations to adopt the international information standard in blood management. It is also being used to facilitate the transition from fragmented regional blood management systems to centralised national systems. Both processes result in significant improvements in efficiency and cross-team collaboration.
  • Patient engagement – Omda ProSang integrates with the Omda Blood Donor app – a user-friendly donor self-service application that helps organisations meet blood collection targets by engaging donors and facilitating easier appointment booking.

Omda ProSang empowers healthcare organisations, providing them with the digital tools required to transition to more efficient work processes, counterbalance the impact of ageing populations and staffing pressures, and improve safety and security. Crucially, it is not only designed to meet current demands but also anticipate and adapt to emerging needs, resulting in an agile, versatile and sustainable solution that guarantees long-term value.
