Omda and the Welsh Ambulance Service demonstrate the power of simulation modelling for improving staff welfare

Omda announces that, alongside the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust (WAST), it will present at the upcoming EMS Tech Show in Birmingham on 18th September 2024. The presentation will focus on new and innovative use cases for its advanced emergency services modelling solution, Omda Readiness.

Omda Senior Solutions Architect, Tef Jansma, and Hugh Bennett, the Assistant Director of Commissioning & Performance at WAST will co-lead the presentation. They will demonstrate the unique ways Omda Readiness has enabled WAST to make positive changes to improve staff welfare and also discuss how the system has helped in finance and commissioning processes.

Academic research shows that staff welfare and patient welfare are intrinsically linked. A meta-analysis entitled Healthcare Staff Wellbeing, Burnout, and Patient Safety: A Systematic Review highlighted the true extent of the issue, revealing that the majority of the studies measuring staff wellbeing identified a strong correlation between poor wellbeing and inferior patient safety. Moreover, 21 out of 30 studies measuring burnout identified an association between burnout and patient safety.

Omda Readiness enabled WAST to tackle this challenge directly by combating shift overruns, which occur when a crew get a call towards the end of their shift and are required to work additional hours to complete the job. While shift overruns are a major concern for overstretched workforces, any changes to policy could result in significant drops in response time or other key performance metrics. Leveraging Omda Readiness’s advanced simulation and modelling capabilities, WAST has been able to analyse and optimise operational variables impacting staff welfare and shift overruns, including meal break duration, location, interruption rules, and end-of-shift practices and policies.

“Through meticulous and accurate modelling, Omda Readiness provided us with various options to balance the issue of shift overruns and patient safety,” explains Hugh. “It helped us find a solution that improved staff welfare while maintaining our ability to respond to high acuity incidents. We went on to implement that solution and have seen a reduction in shift overruns ever since.”

Omda Readiness provided WAST with a means of analysing and modelling the complex interplay between staff welfare and patient safety in a virtual environment, allowing the service to test creative solutions that would otherwise be difficult to assess. Working in close collaboration with WAST, Omda has solved a critical operational challenge, demonstrating the power of innovative emergency response modelling and its value to modern emergency service organisations.

Join Omda for the presentation at the EMS Tech Show in Birmingham on the 18th of September 2024, from 10:30 – 11:00. The presentation is entitled “Enhancing Staff Welfare Through Advanced Emergency Services Modelling: The Welsh Ambulance Service Experience.”
